The Riverdale community is fervently opposed to Simone Metro Properties/WestMed/Montefiore Medical Center's plans to erect an 11-story ambulatory care center on Riverdale Avenue in the Bronx. We highly recommend for this medical facility to be built at the Loehmann's on Broadway site since that store is being disposed of in a bankruptcy proceeding.  Although it has been reported that Montefiore was going to withdraw their current plans, NO withdrawal has been made.  No Certificate of Need has been approved by New York State Department of Health for this project. We strongly oppose any plans to build a parking garage for 120-140 cars on Oxford Avenue, a narrow and winding residential street behind the building.  We demand that the NYC Buildings Department stop hiding the official building plans that have been submitted for this project and allow for the public to review them and file objections.  These plans are NOT intellectual property.  We demand that all safety codes and environmental laws and sanitation codes be adhered to so no negligence occurs.

Montefiore plans to attract 1,000 people a day between 7am-9pm, (9am-5pm on weekends). We are already over-saturated with medical providers. The Montefiore Monstrosity will harm the practices of more than 100 trusted medical providers in our area. The traffic congestion on Oxford Avenue and Riverdale Avenue will create a nightmare. Our elected officials need to stop compromising in the media with Montefiore and represent families and seniors.

After more than 200 neighbors attended a series of meetings to oppose the Montefiore Monstrosity, Community Board 8 agreed to oppose this development. At least one Oxford Avenue homeowner expects that his family's home will be lost in a foreclosure as a result of this debacle. Does Montefiore have to spend their recent $6,000,000 federal grant on Riverdale Avenue instead of in an area that has better access to public transportation?
